Indian basil (Ocimum basilicum) is a short-duration crop cultivated for essential oil used in flavoring, fragrances, pharmaceuticals, and aromatherapy. Thriving in tropical and subtropical climates, CSIR-CIMAP has developed high-yielding varieties with enhanced chemical profiles, producing 200–250 q/ha herb and 100–125 kg oil/ha, with net returns of ₹40,000–45,000/ha in three months.
