I-STEM is a National Portal, which assists researchers to locate the specific facility(ies) they need for their R&D work. The portal also assists in shortlisting and identifying the facilities based on distance and time of availability.

About I-STEM

  • The Indian Science, Technology, and Engineering facilities Map (I-STEM) project, an initiative of the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, is a National Portal for sharing of publicly funded scientific equipment available at R&D and Academic institutions.
  • Launched by Hon’ble PM on Jan 2020, the I-STEM portal facilitates sharing of costly R&D resources/equipment/software with all institutions including tier-2/tier-3 institutions in order to optimize the usage of these resources across the country by researchers and start-ups.
  • I-STEM Portal is being implemented in two phases and has the registration from 35,284 users and more than 27,271 instruments are uploaded by 3345 institutes PAN-India as on date.
  • The D/o Expenditure vide O.M. dated 03/07/2025 has advised all funding agencies to ensure equipment funded by them, costing above INR 20 Lakhs, are to be uploaded mandatorily on I-STEM portal.

MISSION

Recent Initiatives Taken by O/o PSA

The O/o PSA has been persistently following up and has undertaken the following:
  • meeting

    Awareness/Familiarization of Nodal Officers - A meeting with all stakeholder ministries/departments was also held to discuss about the concept and operation module of I-STEM Portal. The meeting aimed at familiarizing the Ministries/Departments on the importance of the portal and the requirement to put all the equipment funded by each Ministry/Department, on the I-STEM Portal. It was emphasized that all the Govt. R&D labs and institutions which have publicly funded equipment to get registered with I-STEM portal.

    Following the meeting, one to one interaction sessions were conducted with all stakeholders ministry/departments to help them familiarize to get register on I-STEM Portal.

    As a result of these sessions, around 400 institutions from 14 different Ministries/Departments got registered with the Portal during last 06 months.

    In order to increase the outreach activities among tier-2 and tier-3 cities, several stakeholders’ engagement are conducted on regular basis.
