Inviting Applications for Sourcing suitable Material of Construction for selection of Cathodes material for electrolysis in the production of Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD) by MOIL Limited

Office of Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India is facilitating a Call for Sourcing suitable Material of Construction for selection of Cathodes material for electrolysis in the production of Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD) by MOIL Limited.

MOIL Limited is a Schedule ‘A’ Mini Ratna Public sector Company under Ministry of Steel and is the single largest producer of Manganese Ore in India catering to the demand of steel industry, dry cell battery and chemical producers. 

In the process of production of Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide (EMD) of high quality without lead, which is not environment friendly, lead cathodes have been replaced with graphite cathodes and lead steam coils have been replaced with zirconium coils. Even though there is an improvement in quality, wherein lead content has reduced to less than 100 PPM from 400 PPM, graphite cathodes have started giving problems due to brittleness and difficulty in handling. 

Hence, they are seeking suggestions regarding alternative cathode material other than titanium which is to be used in acidic atmosphere at a temperature of 1000 C and can withstand stresses for cleaning of any solid deposits.=
