Shankar Balasubramanian

prof

Prof Sir Shankar Balasubramanian, Herchel Smith Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge, won the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences. His work in the field of nucleic acids, his contributions to chemistry, and their applications to the biological and medical sciences have earned him global recognition. He along with Prof Sir David Klenerman invented the next-generation sequencing methodology, Solexa sequencing. The method of sequencing has revolutionized biological sciences by making high precision genome sequencing at a very low cost a reality. The method was commercialized as a spinout company of Cambridge University and is now part of Illumina Inc.

Suchitra Sebastian

prof

Prof Suchitra Sebastian, Department of Physics (The Cavendish Laboratory), University of Cambridge, won the New Horizons in Physics Prize for her work on “high precision electronic and magnetic measurements that have profoundly changed our understanding of high-temperature superconductors and unconventional insulators.” Suchitra studies quantum particles and their behaviour at extreme conditions like high magnetic fields, temperature, and pressure to discover unusual phases of matter. She talks about her work in an interview.
