Spirometers, which are currently used for measuring lung volume parameters, require forced expiration. This causes difficulties for children, geriatric patients and even patients with moderate to severe pulmonary problems.
In this device, the patient has to breathe normally (also known as tidal breathing). The overall test time is about a minute which is much less than 15-20 minutes taken by spirometers.
Forced oscillation technology is used to measure functions of the lungs.
