Calls for Proposals for Indigenously developed cost effective technology for Animal Identification and Traceability of Bovines by Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying

The Office of Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India is facilitating Calls for Proposals for Indigenously developed cost effective technology for Animal Identification and Traceability of Bovines by Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying

Animals are identified using polyurethane tags with unique identification number. It has been estimated that 5 to 10% of the tags are lost as these tags are applied externally. It is also difficult to read identification number therefore it is need of the hour to give permanent identification to cattle and buffaloes.

The technology of use RFID among animals is presently very costly the cost of the ranges from Rs 50 to 200 and reader is also costing huge amount ranging from Rs 15000-20000. RFID is near to permanent identification number as it is applied under the skin and it cannot be removed easily.  As technology is costly it is not used among the farm animals in India.

Further, the linking of the identification with biometrics like muzzle biometrics for cattle increases the reliability of identification and traceability.

Interested entrepreneur may develop cost effective technology systems for identification of farm animals specially cattle and buffaloes along with linking of UID to Biometrics.
